At The Money Forward

A currency option or forward contract where the strike price is set equal to the forward rate available in the market for the same maturity. This means the contract starts out with no intrinsic profit or loss-just a neutral hedge against future currency movements.

For example, if the 3-month forward rate for GBP/USD is 1.3000, then an At The Money Forward would also have a strike price of 1.3000. This setup is often used by businesses that want to lock in a known exchange rate for a future transaction without speculating on currency direction.

It’s different from an Out of the Money or In the Money option, where the strike price is deliberately set above or below the market to reduce costs or increase protection. At The Money Forwards are especially useful when the goal is to fully hedge a future cash flow (like an invoice or loan repayment) at today’s forward rate, and they are frequently used in cash flow hedging strategies.

This concept connects closely with Spot Rate, Currency Forwards, and Mark-to-Market practices used to track the value of open positions over time.
