What We’re Watching in the FX Market This Month

As we approach the midpoint of Q2 2025, global currency markets are reacting to a unique combination of macroeconomic developments, geopolitical shifts, and central bank policies. At Okoora, we keep a close eye on these dynamics—not just because they shape the foreign exchange (FX) landscape, but because they directly impact how our clients manage cross-border transactions and hedge currency risk.

Here’s a breakdown of the key FX themes and currency pairs we’re monitoring closely this month:

1. Diverging central bank policies: Fed vs. ECB

The U.S. Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank (ECB) are navigating different monetary paths. After aggressive rate hikes in 2023 and 2024, the Fed is signaling a cautious stance amid cooling inflation and softening labor data. Markets are increasingly pricing in a potential rate cut as early as July.

Meanwhile, the ECB remains more hawkish. Eurozone inflation remains sticky, and officials continue to emphasize the need to maintain restrictive rates. This divergence is putting upward pressure on EUR/USD, which has clawed its way back above the 1.09 mark.

What to watch: U.S. inflation prints (CPI, PCE), ECB meeting minutes, and labor market data.

2. USD/JPY and the yen’s volatility

The Japanese yen remains under pressure despite recent verbal interventions from the Bank of Japan and Japanese Ministry of Finance. The BOJ’s ultra-loose policy, combined with U.S. yield differentials, has pushed USD/JPY back toward the 155 level—a psychological threshold that could trigger fresh market intervention.

With speculation mounting over when (or if) the BOJ will normalize policy, traders are skittish, and volatility is high.

What to watch: BOJ policy statements, intervention chatter, and U.S. Treasury yields.

3. Emerging market currencies under stress

High global interest rates and a strong U.S. dollar are putting pressure on emerging market (EM) currencies such as the Turkish lira (TRY), South African rand (ZAR), and Brazilian real (BRL). Political instability and commodity price volatility are exacerbating the situation in many regions.

For businesses with exposure to EM currencies, hedging strategies are increasingly essential.

What to watch: IMF and World Bank updates, commodity price swings, and political headlines in key EM economies.

4. Commodity-linked currencies react to global growth outlook

The Australian dollar (AUD) and Canadian dollar (CAD) are being buffeted by shifting global growth expectations and commodity prices. Iron ore and oil—key exports—are particularly influential.

The AUD has found some support from China’s latest stimulus measures, while the CAD is reacting to oil supply dynamics and Bank of Canada rate guidance.

What to watch: China economic data, OPEC updates, and Canadian inflation numbers.

5. Geopolitical risks: A wildcard in FX

Ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, along with rising trade tensions between the U.S. and China, continue to inject uncertainty into currency markets. Safe-haven flows are reemerging, benefiting the Swiss franc (CHF) and, to a lesser extent, gold-backed strategies.

What to watch: Diplomatic developments, NATO meetings, and any escalation in trade policies.
